A Day in the Life of a Mom-Herbalist

This daily blog has been about the struggles of juggling motherhood with being a full-time student for the first eight months of its existence.  I still share some of my life now that I've graduated but I also share information each day on herbs that I've learned along this journey.   While my herbariums are listed for free membership, I provide four fields from them in my blog: Constituents (the active ingredients of the herbs), the therapeutic actions (Examples are expectorant and stimulant), indications (colds, skin rashes, emphysema, etc), and safety information. More information can be found in the herbariums but these are the most important educational fields.  I also share scientific studies to help educate people who think there are no studies showing herbs work.

Membership to this site is free.

Not as much to discuss in the constituents today but still great information!  Class starts back up in two days and I still have so much more to do around here.  I've gotten NOTHING done outside I wanted to accomplish and probably won't. My son is wanting a nap so I need to get off here soon. I've already gotten my errands done today so I can now focus on the house once I get him to sleep.  That is, if my daughter cooperates, I can focus on the house.  If she doesn't quit trying to take a bath in my kitchen sink, I'll be turning the water off to the sink when I'm not using it!  Time to induce sleep!

On to the rest of the constituents for European Elder!

Alkanes simply means it's a compound that has hydrocarbon molecules with only single bonds.  This suffix -ane, generally means it is one of these compounds (Ganora, 2009, p. 20, 93).

Hyperoside (Quercetin Glycosides, Flavonoids)
is a cardioprotective antioxidant and is anti-inflammatory (Ganora, 2009, p. 120).

Sambunigrin accumulates in the leaves and bark of the elderberry plant. It can have toxic levels in the unripe berries. This includes the red-berry variety so cooking is needed.  CAN have toxic levels doesn't mean DOES (Ganora, 2009, p. 105).

Constituents
: Triterpenes (A- and B-amyrin), quercetin glycosides, isoquercitrin

Have a Great Day!

These pages are also linked on the Herbal Lists page but this is the list of things that get discussed more frequently so I added the link here.
