A Day in the Life of a Mom-Herbalist

This daily blog has been about the struggles of juggling motherhood with being a full-time student for the first eight months of its existence.  I still share some of my life now that I've graduated but I also share information each day on herbs that I've learned along this journey.   While my herbariums are listed for free membership, I provide four fields from them in my blog: Constituents (the active ingredients of the herbs), the therapeutic actions (Examples are expectorant and stimulant), indications (colds, skin rashes, emphysema, etc), and safety information. More information can be found in the herbariums but these are the most important educational fields.  I also share scientific studies to help educate people who think there are no studies showing herbs work.

Membership to this site is free.

Semester 4, Week 7, Day 2: Valerian Constituents

Sorry there was no post yesterday.  My children didn't sleep well the night before and were really needy so I didn't get anything done.  I did get to look over the lessons for the week.  I discovered the timelines that are upcoming.  I will need to do my final in Health and Wellness on 20 November which is only 5 weeks away. My draft paper is due in 4 weeks.  It needs 50 sources.  That number is not a problem just getting it done around the needs of the children will be.  The discussion post this week for capstone is about issues you discover while writing your outline, which is due at the end of week 2 (Have I ever said I hate outlines?).  I'm sure I'm going to blow the minds of my classmates all the things that need to be considered as an author.  I just realized I forgot to add editor to my list. Since my posts from second semester got deleted, I can add here that I've been thinking about these books since then. I have notes in a notebook about what needs to be in there and such.  I don't think this kind of project could be done in the allotted 4 months without all the fore-thought I've had.  Plus, my English degree and the classes I chose to take have me primed for it.  It's cool combing so many interests into one project. The stress is high right now but the future looks very fun!  After this post, I will be switching to discussion posts from last semester while I work on herbarium.  I'll probably do the third semester ones since those are already started. My intent is also to get my the text of my book entry done in this period so all I will have to do on it will be the pictures as my plant grows. Love and Light!

On to constituents of valerian!

Valerianone is anstispasmodic (Ganora, 2009, p. 68).

Valepotriates are a mild sedative (Ganora, 2009, p. 68).

Formic Acid is an organic acid that is water-soluble but more so in solutions that are neutral or basic. (Ganora, 2009, p. 44, 63, 81, 83, 102).

Monoterpenes are soluble in steam, fixed oils and middle to high percentage alcohol solutions. These are generally found in essential oils as major, volatile compounds.  Ganora has a LOT of information on these but I think this is the most important information for this audience (Ganora, 2009, p. 44, 46, 51, 68, 134, 136, 139).

Constituents: bornyl formate, bornyl isovalerianate, and valerianic ester, Methyl ketone,  valerianeine, chatarine, actinidine, valerene, , valtrate, isovaltrate,  baldrinals, valerenal, camphene, pinenes, Carbolic acids –  gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), hydroxypinoresinol, butyl isovalerate and eremophilene

Have a Great Day!
