A Day in the Life of a Mom-Herbalist

This daily blog has been about the struggles of juggling motherhood with being a full-time student for the first eight months of its existence.  I still share some of my life now that I've graduated but I also share information each day on herbs that I've learned along this journey.   While my herbariums are listed for free membership, I provide four fields from them in my blog: Constituents (the active ingredients of the herbs), the therapeutic actions (Examples are expectorant and stimulant), indications (colds, skin rashes, emphysema, etc), and safety information. More information can be found in the herbariums but these are the most important educational fields.  I also share scientific studies to help educate people who think there are no studies showing herbs work.

Membership to this site is free.

My capstone teacher got with me on my project idea so I have a "go" for doing a book entry.  This means I will be focusing on Rosemary outside of entries I do for this blog.  I put together my framework for what needs to go into my book entry and I'm sitting at five pages already. The minimum requirement is 30 pages, max is 35 so I may have to scale pictures smaller or leave things out to make it within the page limit requirements. I got this, though.  Very exciting in fact!  I'm already formulating how I will present my entry as well when I defend my project at the end of class.  I apologize about the small amount for oregano below.  That is one of the herbs that has spurred me on to write books.  It's a common herb yet people don't talk about it in herbal medicine.  Given the wonderful things oil of oregano is capable of, I really think this plant needs to be discussed!  The kids are fed and currently smearing water into the table behind me.  Glad I have clean towels. I tried to read my toxicology text book last night and I got through one paragraph before my son noticed I was reading.  On the bright side, he can almost say the word "book".  I'm going to leave this here and see if the kids want lunch since they got up so early this morning.  They are both wanting to be held and that normally means they want changed or food.  Love and Light!

On to oregano!

Constituents: Volatile oil (carvacrol, thymol, beta-bisabolene, caryophyllene, linalool, borneol); tannins, resin, sterols, and flavonoids.

Therapeutic Actions: carvacrol and thymol give the plant antibacterial and antifungal properties. Also an antiseptic (Chevallier, 2016, p. 243)

Indications: Historically treated skin sores and aching muscles, used as an antiseptic.  Also used for stomachache and respiratory disease, cough, asthma, allergies, sinusitis, bronchitis, dysepepsia, bloating, intestinal parasites, dysmenorrhea, rheumatoid arthritis, urinary tract disorders, headaches, diabetes, dental bleeding, heart conditions and hyperlipidemia (Natural Medicine Monograph). Chevallier (2016) adds the Antient Greeks used this as a cure-all. Notably effective against Candida and E. coli. Used for acute and chronic infections of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts: gastroenteritis, dysentery, bronchitis, cough and tonsillitis.  The herb and oil inhibit gut bacteria so frequent use is bad but it can eliminate or reduce the harmful bacteria in the gut which cause bloating, gas, and abdominal discomfort (p. 243).

Safety: The herb and oil inhibit gut bacteria so frequent use is bad.  Do not use oil internally. Do not use as medicine during pregnancy. External use may cause contact dermatitis. (Chevallier, 2016, p. 243)

Have a Great Day!

These pages are also linked on the Herbal Lists page but this is the list of things that get discussed more frequently so I added the link here.
