A Day in the Life of a Mom-Herbalist

This daily blog has been about the struggles of juggling motherhood with being a full-time student for the first eight months of its existence.  I still share some of my life now that I've graduated but I also share information each day on herbs that I've learned along this journey.   While my herbariums are listed for free membership, I provide four fields from them in my blog: Constituents (the active ingredients of the herbs), the therapeutic actions (Examples are expectorant and stimulant), indications (colds, skin rashes, emphysema, etc), and safety information. More information can be found in the herbariums but these are the most important educational fields.  I also share scientific studies to help educate people who think there are no studies showing herbs work.

Membership to this site is free.

I got 2 discussion boards done and a quiz yesterday.  Today I plan to get the other 2 quizzes done so I can focus on the reading for the other discussion board. If the kids let me...  My daughter got mad my son ate his chocolate and a fight broke out.  It ended with the normal female thing of hair-pulling.  I had to step in.  The future is going to be fun...  LOL  She was asleep last night by 6 and woke in the night and had trouble going back to sleep but she did so she slept in this morning.  I don't think her stomach was ready for breakfast because she ate some but now she's eating peanut butter from a spoon, one of her favorite snacks.  All in all, I think the day is going well. I started her clothes washing this morning.  She actually got up without me going to get her this morning too, very cool!

On to the constituents of comfrey.

Lithospermic acid is found in roots in the Boraginaceae family and potentially has contraceptive properties  (Hoffman, 2003, p. 93).

Fructose is a natural sweetener found in some soft drinks. This is listed under the heading of foods that can cause gas. (Hoffman, 2003, p. 263)

Steroidal saponins are structured like triterpenoids but with 4 rings.  These are used as detergents and re in fire extinguishers and fish poisons but are safe for human consumption. They share many of the properties of the higher level, saponins.  (Hoffman, 2003, p. 81)

Saponins can be antifertility, antihepatoxic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, capillary strengthening, cytotoxic (antitumor), insecticidal, antifeedant, molluscicidal, piscicidal, and plant growth inhibitors. These are listed under the heading "General Properties of Steroidal Saponins". (Hoffman, 2003, p. 81)

Proteins are building blocks of the body.

Inulins are composed mainly of fructose. They are found in many foods, including the processed food created by the industry. They ferment in the colon for that healthy microbiome. They are antitumor, anitmicrobial, hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic, antiosteoprotic, improve mineral absorption and balance. Some of these have  alack of enough studies to fully state they are FACT but these are traditional uses.  (Hoffman, 2003, p. 45)

This is it for Hoffman but lots of great information!  I need to go get my daughter off the kitchen counter.  Again.  Have a great day!

Constituents: pyrrolizidine alkaloids (echimidine, lycopsamine, symlandine); phenolic acids (rosmarinic, chlorogenic); mucilage (glucose); choline, volatile oil, triterpenes, protein (particularly the amino acids methionine, isoleucine, lysine and tryptophan).

These pages are also linked on the Herbal Lists page but this is the list of things that get discussed more frequently so I added the link here.
