A Day in the Life of a Mom-Herbalist

This daily blog has been about the struggles of juggling motherhood with being a full-time student for the first eight months of its existence.  I still share some of my life now that I've graduated but I also share information each day on herbs that I've learned along this journey.   While my herbariums are listed for free membership, I provide four fields from them in my blog: Constituents (the active ingredients of the herbs), the therapeutic actions (Examples are expectorant and stimulant), indications (colds, skin rashes, emphysema, etc), and safety information. More information can be found in the herbariums but these are the most important educational fields.  I also share scientific studies to help educate people who think there are no studies showing herbs work.

Membership to this site is free.

Here I was, plugging away on reading the day's lessons and I forgot I had not made my post yet!  We had a very good friend over for dinner last night.  I don't know what to think.  2 days in a row I had visits with people who live outside my house!  I did quite enjoy it even if I was scatter-brained.  I had my essay still to write - I lost points because I didn't have enough references and I forgot the title page.  I also got out of here later than I wanted to go get groceries so I was hurried after I got home to get the food all put away and then get dinner cooked (in this case, the veggies and fries for the kids since they don't eat steak).  When he's home, I have to buy a couple of weeks worth of food because there is no check that first week back out.  I'll need more freezer bags with his next check but we have food for the short term. My daughter and I went out and got more berries this morning.  He loves helping me pick them because she gets to stand there and eat.  LOL The flying bugs are getting bad back there because it's overgrown but that's okay.  It will keep producing berries for a while.  I do need to make sure I have some pecto for jam.  I got some blueberries in the freezer a well since they were on sale yesterday.

On to the constituents of buchu!

Hesperidin: raises HDL cholesterol and lowers LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. It is also anti-inflammatory and analgesic. (Hoffman, 2003, p. 14)

Quercetin: reduces allergy-induced inflammation, inhibits the growth of head and neck cancres, inhibits reverse transcriptase. (Hoffman, 2003, p. 14)

Limonene: This is the main constituent in oils from citrus fruits. It has expectorant and sedative activities.  It has the potential to prevent pancreatic and breast cancer.   it can be used to dissolve gallstones.  There is potential for this to irritate the skin if sensitives are present.  (Hoffman, 2003, p. 63-4)

Rutin: is an anti-inflammatory and loves to scavenge free-radicals. It helps strengthen blood vessels - specifically capillaries and veins. It is also antiviral and antibacterial.  (Hoffman, 2003, p. 105)

This is all for today.  I have a child needing a nap and 3 lessons that need to be read, 2 of which have video lectures I need to watch.  Much to do and the day isn't getting any longer!  Have a great day!

Active Constituents: diosmin. The essential oil contains diosphenol as well flavonoids. Hoffman (2003) says Volatile oil (menthone, pulegone); flavonoids (diosmetin)

These pages are also linked on the Herbal Lists page but this is the list of things that get discussed more frequently so I added the link here.
