A Day in the Life of a Mom-Herbalist

This daily blog has been about the struggles of juggling motherhood with being a full-time student for the first eight months of its existence.  I still share some of my life now that I've graduated but I also share information each day on herbs that I've learned along this journey.   While my herbariums are listed for free membership, I provide four fields from them in my blog: Constituents (the active ingredients of the herbs), the therapeutic actions (Examples are expectorant and stimulant), indications (colds, skin rashes, emphysema, etc), and safety information. More information can be found in the herbariums but these are the most important educational fields.  I also share scientific studies to help educate people who think there are no studies showing herbs work.

Membership to this site is free.

Today is my third anniversary of returning to civilian life.  I do NOT look back.  I can't say I enjoyed much about my service but I did learn a lot and it's my service time that is paying for my current education so I can't say it was ALL bad.  I didn't make many lasting friends, most thought I was weird.  They would probably say I'm more so now since I have continued to grow as I walk the path I was meant to walk.  Life may be busy and sometimes rough, but THIS is where I'm supposed to be. Growth is vital. Challenges encourage growth. The fear of failure encourages you to do better.  I don't know how many books I bought yesterday, it barely made a dent into the ones on my wishlist but I'm looking forward to them getting  here.  I know there are even more the instructors suggested but some of those are QUITE expensive and were outside my budget.  It was nice to at least use SOME of my school money for school.  I will confess I did buy my daughter a Tinkerbell umbrella...  LOL  Last time it rained, I let her hold my umbrella while I got my son out of the truck. She refused to let me have it back.  This way I can have my umbrella back.  LOL  The only tincture on the docket today was rosemary and though I would smell it, there was definitely alcohol in that whiff.  Back in the box!  My bottles should be here before the smaller things are ready.  I also finally got those pruning shears ordered.  Now I can get Rosemary trimmed back as she needs to be after winter killed a few of her branches.  I plan to find a way to protect her from the weather next winter.

On to the rest of the therapeutic actions of yellow dock.

Demulcents soothe inflamed tissue.  These tend to be mucilagous. Meaning they "lube" up the tissues to reduce the inflammation. This would be why 2 of the tinctures I did were so thick, they didn't want to strain well and were slimy to touch.

Hepatics are good for the kidneys.

Tonics are called "nutritive" and clean the blood in a way that helps the body harmonize. They help the lymphatic system work better as well.  I think they are considered nutritive because when you have a bunch of crud trolling your system, it's difficult to absorb the nutrients your body requires.  If you clean up your system a bit, the body can better absorb those things it requires.

Tomorrow I'll get into the constituents. And hope my child doesn't try to eat any more of her toys...  Have a great day!

Constituents: anthraquinone glycosides (chrysophanol, emodin, nepodin, physcion, frangulin, and chrysophanein); tannins and oxalates.

These pages are also linked on the Herbal Lists page but this is the list of things that get discussed more frequently so I added the link here.
