A Day in the Life of a Mom-Herbalist

This daily blog has been about the struggles of juggling motherhood with being a full-time student for the first eight months of its existence.  I still share some of my life now that I've graduated but I also share information each day on herbs that I've learned along this journey.   While my herbariums are listed for free membership, I provide four fields from them in my blog: Constituents (the active ingredients of the herbs), the therapeutic actions (Examples are expectorant and stimulant), indications (colds, skin rashes, emphysema, etc), and safety information. More information can be found in the herbariums but these are the most important educational fields.  I also share scientific studies to help educate people who think there are no studies showing herbs work.

Membership to this site is free.

Semester 3, Week 15, Day 7

The last day of the semester!  Tomorrow starts my 2 weeks off. I got nothing done yesterday that I wanted to.   It was a strange day.  I do consider it a good day, though.  The kids behaved really well while we were out. My daughter fell asleep in the truck and went back to sleep in HER bed when I got her back in the house and my son didn't try to wake her up.  No, they were not overtaken by a doppleganger!  LOL  They are coloring right now which means they will begin eating the crayons soon or coloring on the walls and windows.  Well, I was half-right.  There are now little bits of pink crayon all over my living room floor.  I guess vacuuming is also on the list to do today.

On to the constituents of Blessed Thistle!  Two of these I have talked about before but Petersen added to it so I added them in.

Cnicin (sesquiterpene lactone glycosides) is antimicrobial (Petersen 2018, p. 169).

Lignans tend to have antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-viral, and antifeedant properties (Hoffman, 2003, p. 112-4, 143, 175; Petersen 2018, p. 169).

Polyacetylenes (Sesquiterpese lactone glycosides) are alcohol-solvent between 40-60% (Ganora, 2009, p. 44, 64, 85, 97, 98). Petersen adds they are anti-microbial (p. 169).

Absinthin, also seen as absinthiin, is a bitter principle and the main one in wormwood (Hoffman, 2003, p. 70).

Constituents: Triterpenoids (alpha-amyrenone, alpha-amyrin acetate, alpha amyrine, multiflorenol acetate), lignans (trachelogenin, arctigenin, nortracheloside), polyenes, and essential oils (para-cymene, fenchon, citral, cinnamaldehyde)

Have a great day!

These pages are also linked on the Herbal Lists page but this is the list of things that get discussed more frequently so I added the link here.
