A Day in the Life of a Mom-Herbalist

This daily blog has been about the struggles of juggling motherhood with being a full-time student for the first eight months of its existence.  I still share some of my life now that I've graduated but I also share information each day on herbs that I've learned along this journey.   While my herbariums are listed for free membership, I provide four fields from them in my blog: Constituents (the active ingredients of the herbs), the therapeutic actions (Examples are expectorant and stimulant), indications (colds, skin rashes, emphysema, etc), and safety information. More information can be found in the herbariums but these are the most important educational fields.  I also share scientific studies to help educate people who think there are no studies showing herbs work.

Membership to this site is free.

Breakfast is done!  I had to vacuum up eggs from the carpet because my son stole my daughter's plate and made a mess.  At least she was full and just picking at that point!  I am way behind in my studies.  My daughter was in a mommy-mood yesterday.  Thankfully she sees the dentist tomorrow.  I know those loose teeth are bothering her.  I have a feeling he is going to pull them.  She is still putting her tongue between her teeth and not letting me get her gum really well so they will never heal.  I know she doesn't understand and it would be so much easier if she did but we'll do what we must. I can't put my oil on her teeth forever.  I'll probably bring it with me tomorrow just in case.  At this point, I should be halfway through the modules.  There are 11, I'm on number 4.  We shall see where I get today.  The postman is bringing more birthday stuff today.  I think the Tinkerbell plates and napkins will finally be here today.  I did find Tinkerbell plates, etc and have them added to my cart.  When I get money again, I think someone would like them for a gift...  :)  One of the plates is heart-shaped.  I think the only thing better would be the shape of a butterfly!  LOL  okay, I think it's time to get to my studies.  I have chores done and the kids are playing so I have a window!  LOL

On to the actions of licorice!

I thought I discussed antihepatoxic before but it's not in my list so here you go: This means it protects the liver from toxins that would otherwise have negative consequences. If taking an herb that has hepatoxic properties, adding an herb with this action to the recipe can counter that action and protect the liver from otherwise potential hazards.  Also, if doing a cleanse or a detox, it's advisable to use an herb that is antihepatoxic because of the amount of toxins the liver will be exposed to.

Adrenal agent can mean a few things.  The simple definition is it helps the adrenal glands work better. If you are suffering from adrenal fatigue, this is a great property to use. If combined with a detoxing herb(s), this property can take on a whole new meaning of detoxing the adrenal glands.  This would be like adding a laundry booster to your detergent in your dirty clothes.  Adrenal would get them clean but adding a detox to this action would get them "squeaky clean".

Constituents: glycyrrhizin which is a saponin inside the bark; glycyrrhic acid which is 50 times sweeter than sugar (Chevallier, 2016, p. 101).  Chevallier also says isoflavones (liquiritin, isoliquiritin, formononetin). Hoffman (2003) says oleanane triterpene (glycyrrhizin, glycyrrhetinic acid, and phytosterols), flavanones;  chalcones; polysaccharides (glucans); volatile oil (fenchone, linalool, furfuryl alcohol, benzaldehyde); starch, sugars, amino acid (p. 554).

Have a great day!
