A Day in the Life of a Mom-Herbalism Student

This daily blog is about the struggles of juggling motherhood with being a full-time student.  I also share information each day on herbs that I've learned along this journey.  The herbs I am currently discussing are all things I received in my lab kits for class, meaning I get to actually work with them and pass on first-hand knowledge. While my herbariums are listed for free membership, I provide four fields from them in my blog: Constituents (the active ingredients of the herbs), the therapeutic actions (Examples are expectorant and stimulant), indications (colds, skin rashes, emphysema, etc), and safety information. More information can be found in the herbariums but these are the most important educational fields.

Membership to this site is free.

Today is day one of studying for my pathophysiology exam.  All of the tings I've turned in have been graded except my discussion boards which are dependent on responses. I'm working on those as people respond.  My grades right now are awesome but the finals always bring them down because I can't get the reading done so I'm heavily reliant on the multiple choice portion.  If I don't get at least Bs, the G I Bill won't cover the class so it's more than just wanting to do really well.  It's a huge reason for me to push hard on those other assignments on getting them right. The kids were cranky, got fed and are now playing loudly.  LOL The mailman just brought me 3 packages, another 5 are coming UPS today. My daughter followed me to the kitchen and I had to just peak at one. I was right, it's one of her birthday presents.  She's normally right there when I buy stuff but I buy it early enough, she should forget about it.  With it being a Tinkerbell toy, I don't expect her to forget about it.  Most of what's coming is decorations for her party and a couple of my books still have not gotten here.  One of the other packages were cupcake holders.  There was only 6 in the package which means I will need more but that's okay.  There is likely to be only 4 kids at this coming party anyway.  I just want to collect more for future years since it takes so long to get everything. I do wish I could find Tink locally but at least I have a way of ordering it so I guess I can't really complain.  She has her dental appointment on Monday so I finally get to get her in there.   I can't wait to get these kids on the Tricare dental because it's so much better. Well, I had better get to studying.  I need to pass my classes!

On to the constituents of Ginger!

Zingiberene has carminative properties and is used for flavoring (Hoffman, 2003, p. 69).

Oleoresins are preparations of volatile oils and resins with a menstruum of acetone, ether or alcohol.   Hoffman says turpentine is a natural oleoresin.  The other classification of these is prepared which uses one of the solvents mentioned here and percolates until the solvent is gone (Hoffman, 2003, p. 86-7).

Constituents: b-bisabolene; gingerols, gingerdiols, gingerdiones, dihydrogingerdiones, shogaols

That's all for Hoffman.  Looking into oleoresin has left me with a question of how are they used.  Perhaps I'll find that answer in the future.  Have a great day!

I am currently a student at American College of Healthcare Sciences earning my Masters of Science degree in Herbal Medicine. This blog is my journey of juggling mom-life with student life. My husband is a truck driver so I'm essentially a single mom all but 3 days a month. It's a challenge but we will get through this. I complete this degree on 18 December 2019.  I plan to write books and continue here on my blog after I complete school.

Rather than using the Herbal Lists page for some things, let me try this and see what everyone thinks.
