A Day in the Life of a Mom-Herbalist

This daily blog has been about the struggles of juggling motherhood with being a full-time student for the first eight months of its existence.  I still share some of my life now that I've graduated but I also share information each day on herbs that I've learned along this journey.   While my herbariums are listed for free membership, I provide four fields from them in my blog: Constituents (the active ingredients of the herbs), the therapeutic actions (Examples are expectorant and stimulant), indications (colds, skin rashes, emphysema, etc), and safety information. More information can be found in the herbariums but these are the most important educational fields.  I also share scientific studies to help educate people who think there are no studies showing herbs work.

Membership to this site is free.

Ginkgo Constituents Day 3

The image above is from my class lesson.

I discovered this site didn't hyperlink the links I shared yesterday so I went back and fixed it.

I have not looked yet for the remaining constituents in Ganora (doing things backwards today). The herb I will start tomorrow is kelp.  This is one I had trouble finding information on so I'm hoping I can find enough to fill in the fields and provide helpful information.

I have all the word documents down and even restructured how the Virtual Herbarium page looks.  For those I have grown and taken pictures, I have a picture of the herb next to the link.  The rest of the pictures will come.  It will either be me taking them or me finding someone who I can attribute the work to.  I certainly won't be growing kelp (for example) any time soon!  I may also go to a nursery and see if they will allow me to take pictures of the plants.  That will be interesting with the children!

Time to see how much I can fill in below.  Love and Light!

On to Ginkgo constituents.

Diterpene lactones are also called terpene trilactones. Ganora explain this is because they have three lactone rings within their structure (Ganora, 2009, p 140).

Kaempferol Derivatives

Bilobalide is a PAF and a bronchodilator.  They also work with flavonols for anti-inflammatory and CNS-protective effects (Ganora, 2009, p. 140).  What this says in "english" is it prevents blood clotting, expands the respiratory system to help with asthmatic attacks and helps protect the central nervous system.

Flavone glycosides

Flavonol glycosides are antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective compounds (Ganora, 2009, p. 121)

Have a Great Day!

These pages are also linked on the Herbal Lists page but this is the list of things that get discussed more frequently so I added the link here.
