A Day in the Life of a Mom-Herbalist

This daily blog has been about the struggles of juggling motherhood with being a full-time student for the first eight months of its existence.  I still share some of my life now that I've graduated but I also share information each day on herbs that I've learned along this journey.   While my herbariums are listed for free membership, I provide four fields from them in my blog: Constituents (the active ingredients of the herbs), the therapeutic actions (Examples are expectorant and stimulant), indications (colds, skin rashes, emphysema, etc), and safety information. More information can be found in the herbariums but these are the most important educational fields.  I also share scientific studies to help educate people who think there are no studies showing herbs work.

Membership to this site is free.

The image above is from my class lesson.

Breakfast is done and the kids are playing by themselves this morning.  My ears are not inundated with the sounds of fighting over this or that toy.  Miracles do happen!

I'm still working on the virtual herbariums and I got all the way through the Ls yesterday.  I have 14 left at this point.  I'll get as far as I can today but I still need to add the ginkgo indications to the indications list.  That list takes the longest to update when I provide a new herb.  I don't know if people even read them but I feel they will be useful in the future and I'd rather stay on top of it now than have someone in the future ask me for it.

Some very good information below! Love and Light!

On to Ginkgo Actions (the actions not previously discussed).

Circulatory Tonic/Stimulant
: Stimulates circulation.  This helps with far more illnesses than the first thought would make a person think.

Digestive Bitter: I think this term is a bit redundant.  Digestives are bitter and bitters are digestive so only one of these words is needed.  All this means is it aids in digestion.

Vasodilator
: is the same thing as vascorelaxant but I did a crappy job of explaining it.  It reduces blood pressure by reducing the pressure on the walls of the blood vessels by relaxing.  This explanation can get a bit complicated in explaining how the blood vessels work but I think this is better than the previous description.

Uterine
Stimulant: Stimulates the reproductive areas. This is good for when the menstrual cycle is sluggish like having late periods or the cycle not being regular.

Constituents: Diterpene lactones (gingkolides A, B, C, and J), sesquiterpene lactones (bilobalide), flavonol glycosides (flavone glycosides – ginkgetin, quercetin, and kaempferol derivatives) (Hoffman, 2003, p. 553). Chevallier (2016) says flavonoids, ginkgolides, and bilobalides (p. 100). Petersen (2018) says the leaf has amino acids, flavone glycosides (including ginkolide A, B, and C – these inhibit the PAF platelet activating factor), flavonoids (primarily derived from rutin and include isorhamnetin, quercetin, kaempferol, and proanthocyanidins), proanthocyanidins, the trilactonic diterpenes, and the sesquiterpene bilabolide. The seed has alkaloids, amino acids, cyanogenetic glycosides, and phenols (p. 33).

Have a Great Day!

These pages are also linked on the Herbal Lists page but this is the list of things that get discussed more frequently so I added the link here.
