A Day in the Life of a Mom-Herbalist

This daily blog has been about the struggles of juggling motherhood with being a full-time student for the first eight months of its existence.  I still share some of my life now that I've graduated but I also share information each day on herbs that I've learned along this journey.   While my herbariums are listed for free membership, I provide four fields from them in my blog: Constituents (the active ingredients of the herbs), the therapeutic actions (Examples are expectorant and stimulant), indications (colds, skin rashes, emphysema, etc), and safety information. More information can be found in the herbariums but these are the most important educational fields.  I also share scientific studies to help educate people who think there are no studies showing herbs work.

Membership to this site is free.

Echinacea Constituents Day 2

Hoffman didn't have any of the constituents below so tomorrow will be a new herb.

I made some good progress on the house and the site yesterday.  I got the herbariums fixed all the way through the Es!  it looks like ginkgo is the next herb in my list.

The children are playing as in fighting over toys...  It's already almost lunch time and I have one load in the drier, another in washer. My cat that had to go on a soft-food-only diet is now having bladder problems.  I moved the litter box yesterday to be closer to where she hangs out.  She doesn't even come out of my room any more because she's afraid she won't make it to the box.  The least I can do is try to make things easier on her.  She is now getting as much cuddling as I can when we go to bed at night. It's not her fault her body is failing her and I don't want her to think she has done anything wrong.  This is just part of the cycle of life.  She is loved.  Love and Light!

On to the constituents of echinacea.

E-chinacoside is classified as a phenylethanoid and has antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and neuroprotective activities (Ganora, 2009, p. 109).

Caffeic Acid Esters/Derivatives: The derivatives have more specific properties than caffeic acid but without the derivative being named specifically, it's hard to know which one is being referenced (G-anora, 2009, p. 108).

Cybarin

Cichoric acid is just one of the building blocks that end up resulting in new plasma cells.  It has anti-HIV activity and can modulate macrophage immune response. This studies need to be continued on this, however, because some say there is nothing detected in plasma after ingestion. This would make sense if it's just a building block of the plasma cells (Ganora, 2009, p. 80, 109).

Echinacin B

Dodeca-2,4,8,10-tetraenic acid: Ganora has two of these listed so I'm not sure which one the source is stating is for echinacea (or if there is even more than this).  The two listed are dodeca-2E,4E,8Z,10E-tetraenic acid and dodeca-2E,4E,8Z,10Z-tetraenic acid. Both of these terms and the one at the beginning simply describe the structure of the cell.  All three are building blocks for isobutylamides as well as a precursor for carboxylic acid (Ganora, 2009, p. 94, 95).

Have a Great Day!

These pages are also linked on the Herbal Lists page but this is the list of things that get discussed more frequently so I added the link here.
